Outreach At CSZ 2026
CSZ meetings have a long history of connecting with local communities through public talks or outreach events. This year, the CSZ 2026 organizers are partnering with Let’s Talk Science to offer local students an insect-focused workshop!
Insect Biology Workshop for local high school students
At CSZ 2026, we are hosting an Insect Biology Workshop in collaboration with Let’s Talk Science to highlight insect science taking place in Canada and hopefully inspire young minds to pay more attention to the small critters buzzing by and scuttling under their feet.
This hands-on workshop will introduce high school students to the fascinating world of insect biology. Students will take on the role of scientists working to design an efficient cricket farming system, using experimental approaches to explore how insects are studied and applied for real-world contexts.
The workshop will include:
A brief presentation on general insect biology and an introduction to applied areas of research like insect farming
Three rotating activities where students will observe live insects (crickets) and collect data on their morphology (species, sex, life stage), temperature limits and metabolic rate (CO2 output)
The workshop will be taking place in a Carleton Biology teaching lab on the 1st floor of the Tory Building. CSZ attendees are welcome and encouraged to drop in, observe the activities and share their own knowledge and interests with the students.
This event is intended to get young students interested in insect/animal biology and understand its importance in our everyday lives. We hope to help inspire the next generation of zoologists who may join us at CSZ in 2030!
